In his four decades with MZ Berger & Company, Bernie Mermelstein has helped grow the timepiece and accessories manufacturer into an international, family-run enterprise with offices in New York City, Toronto, and Hong Kong. When not busy leading the company as chief executive officer, Bernie Mermelstein enjoys taking his grandson to Boston Red Sox games.

The annual three-day, 40-round Major League Baseball Amateur Draft presents franchises with an opportunity to replenish their minor league systems and find promising players for the future. The Red Sox held the 24th overall pick in the 2017 draft and selected six-foot-five, 220-pound, right-handed pitcher Tanner Houck.

Through three seasons with the University of Missouri, Houck compiled an earned run average (ERA) of 3.26 and recorded 292 strikeouts in 301 innings. He was signed to a contract on June 21 and began his first professional season with the Lowell Spinners of the New York-Penn League, where he has a 3.48 ERA and has struck out 12 batters through 10.1 innings.

Since 1977, Bernie Mermelstein has served as CEO and owner of MZ Berger and Company (MZB), a maker of wearables and watches. In his free time, Bernie Mermelstein stays in shape by lifting weights and using the elliptical.

The elliptical’s greatest value for the user is exercising a number of major muscles at once. Properly used, it can strengthen quadriceps, glutes, calves, and hamstrings. Additionally, it works upper-body muscles such as those in the chest, arms, and back. Using the elliptical also helps cut back on mineral loss in weight-bearing bones.

An elliptical workout is easier on the feet than other methods, because feet remain in pedals instead of enduring impacts, as they would when running. Additionally, the workout session is quieter and more comfortable, and users can change their speed and the angle of the machine to burn more calories and work different muscle groups. Like any other exercise, using the elliptical may pay off in improved mood and immune system, as well as lower risk of diseases related to obesity.

Bernie Mermelstein is the owner and CEO of the timepiece and accessory manufacturer MZ Berger & Co., which has received awards such as Wal-Mart Vendor of the Year and Kohl’s Supplier of the Year. Though he lives in New York, Bernie Mermelstein travels to Wisconsin with his sons every year to see a Green Bay Packers game.

The Packers addressed a major need in the first two rounds of the 2017 National Football League (NFL) draft by selecting defensive secondary players Kevin King and Josh Jones. However, the team used five of its 10 selections in the draft to upgrade its offense, beginning in the fourth round with the selection of running back Jamaal Williams. Green Bay also drafted running backs Aaron Jones and Devante Mays as well as wide receivers DeAngelo Yancey and Malachi Dupre.

Williams spent four seasons at Brigham Young University and recorded 35 rushing touchdowns and 3,901 rushing yards. Jones scored 33 touchdowns in four seasons with UTEP, while Mays recorded 12 in two seasons with Utah State. Yancey, meanwhile, was selected 175th overall with a pick the Packers received from the Broncos in a trade. The 6-foot-2, 205-pound receiver caught 20 touchdown passes in four years at Purdue and recorded 2,344 receiving yards. Finally, Dupre, the fourth-to-last pick in the draft, recorded 14 touchdowns and 1,609 receiving yards in three seasons with LSU.

Spin Bikes vs. Exercise Bikes

Bernie Mermelstein has been at the helm of MZ Berger & Co., in Long Island City, New York for four decades as the company’s CEO. During his tenure, he has seen the company expand its operations into numerous new markets. In his leisure time, Bernie Mermelstein enjoys physical fitness activities such as spinning.

For more than 30 years, spin bikes have been found in gyms nationwide; the uninitiated may wonder how they differ from traditional exercise bikes. While both seemingly resemble traditional bicycling on the surface, spin bikes operate with a totally different system of kinetics than resistance bikes.

With spin bikes, the pedals are connected to a flywheel system that keeps the pedals moving even when you stop applying force to them. This feature allows the rider to take a bit of a breather while still getting legwork in, since the pedals will pull the legs along for a bit.

Resistance bikes use magnetic forces to generate the movement, with the pedals stopping altogether when the rider ceases pedaling. For these reasons, spinners can burn up to 200 calories more per hour during a spin class than they could if they just used a traditional exercise bike.

Benefits of Working with a Physical Trainer

As the current owner of MZ Berger and Co., Bernie Mermelstein has been able to grow the company by focusing on product innovation and starting new brands. While away from his work obligations, Bernie Mermelstein stays active through physical activities, such as spinning, lifting weights, and collaborating with a physical trainer.

Working with a physical trainer is optional, but you can produce even better fitness results by pairing with a professional. One of the main reasons that people tend to stay away from equipment other than the treadmill at a gym is because they have no idea how to use it or they are worried about injuries. Physical trainers will guide you on how to utilize the other equipment, such as weights and weight benches. A trainer can create a customized plan specifically targeted to your goals so that you can enhance your flexibility, core strength, and balance.

Although there are many videos and step-by-step articles online about the proper form for various workouts, having a physical trainer present will ensure you’re getting the most out of your exercise routine, exercising safely, and progressing toward your goals.

Benefits of Spin Class

Since 1977, Bernie Mermelstein has led as CEO and owner of MZ Berger & Company in Long Island City, New York. Bernie Mermelstein balances his executive responsibilities with a commitment to personal fitness, which he pursues through twice-daily workouts and spin class three times per week.

A good spin class can help a participant to tone muscles, increase cardiovascular capacity, and burn calories. Depending on intensity, a 45-minute workout may burn approximately 500 calories, though the individual rider can adjust bike settings to burn more or fewer calories.

As you spin, you also get an effective cardiovascular workout that helps to improve your endurance. Most spin classes focus on interval training, which maximizes heart rate as well as calorie consumption. At the same time, you experience an endorphin release that leads to a feeling of overall well-being as you leave class.

Your individual muscle groups also get a strong workout in spin class. Spinning allows you to tone the leg muscles without adding excess bulk, while also strengthening the core. In addition, many classes add upper body work for a more comprehensive workout.

All of this occurs in a low-impact setting that does not stress the joints or present a high risk of muscle tears. Still, it is important for the athlete to warm up before starting class, so that the body is ready to work.

For nearly four decades, Bernie Mermelstein has served as chief executive officer and owner of MZ Berger & Co. in Long Island City, New York. In his leisure time, Bernie Mermelstein enjoys watching professional basketball and is a New York Knicks season ticket-holder.

The Knicks teams of the early 1970s seemed to always be in the championship mix. That was due to the efforts of players like Willis Reed, Walt Frazier, and Phil Jackson. There were other contributors on those teams, however, whose efforts often went unnoticed because they didn’t show up in the box score; Dave DeBusschere is one of the players.

Among the learned in NBA lore, DeBusschere is often lauded as one of the most stalwart defensive players in league history. His efforts on the defensive end of the floor were a pivotal factor in the success of the Knicks early 70s teams.

DeBusschere was a first All-Defensive selection for six years straight; he was selected to eight all-star games, and posted ten straight seasons with a double-double average. While there have been Knicks players that made bigger names for themselves over the years, DeBusschere’s contributions can’t be understated, and the fact that he still isn’t well-known among NBA fans at large makes him one of the most underrated players in Knicks history.
